Sonoma State Eliminated Athletics

Sonoma State to cut its entire athletic department; school has 11 D-II teams

The elimination of athletics at Sonoma State happened over a year ago, but I just learned about it. This move hasn't saved Sonoma State—it still has major budget problems—but it is an excellent move that most colleges and universities should copy. Athletics is an enormous money loser at the vast majority of colleges and universities, it provides benefits to a tiny number of students, it adds absolutely nothing to academics, and it promotes stunted intellectual mediocrity. There is a large amount of data which exposes as shameless lies all claims that athletics programs attract students and increase enrollment. The only athletics we should see at colleges and universities are intramural recreational athletics and club teams which support themselves completely and pay the full cost of any facilities they use.
